MONSTER LOVE tells the story of supernatural misfits PORTENT, GO-GO THE GORGON and SYRENE THE SEA SIREN, a.k.a. THE PSYCHIC FIENDS, who run a telephone psychic hotline business. This hotline was a huge success at first because the Psychic Fiends are real psychics, so they are able to make genuine recommendations about life, love, career and the best combined telephone/Internet access plans, and because all their work is by telephone, they never see their human clients in person.
However, Portent’s rival MORGUANNA MCCOFFIN has been siphoning off all of the Psychic Fiends’ business, and it looks like the Psychic Fiends will be forced to close its doors. When Syrene receives a phone call from a college student who wants a face-to-face consultation, the crew starts freaking out. However, the client - HILLARY SU - is persistent, and when she comes knocking at the door of the Psychic Fiends, so does opportunity.
Hillary is not afraid of the Psychic Fiends’ odd looks - Portent’s green hair and lips, Go-Go’s snaky, talking hair or Syrene’s blue skin - and she soon demonstrates why. Hillary explains that she may look like an ordinary college student, but when she gets near a boy that she likes, she “breaks out” in quills all over her face and her fingers become pointy spikes. This affliction has completely ruined her love life and has earned Hillary the nickname QUILLARY.
Portent is sympathetic to Quillary’s plight, but explains that the Psychic Fiends may soon close down due to lack of business. Quillary, a business major, says that she is not the only “monster” with dating problems and that the Psychic Fiends are in a unique position to fill a special niche and help paranormals with their woeful love lives. Quillary offers to help Portent retool the business into an online dating service targeted specifically to monsters with dating horror stories.
Portent immediately sees the potential of the idea and hires Quillary on the spot. The Psychic Fiends rebrand as MONSTER LOVE. They set about attracting the lovelorn monster clientele using the latest in viral marketing techniques and soon have clients crawling out of the woodwork - literally. From divorced witches whose love potions don’t work anymore to zombies who need personal hygiene guidance to werewolves who can’t control their midnight ramblings, Monster Love is there to assist.
Portent and company’s renewed success does not go unnoticed. Morguanna McCoffin is not satisfied with cornering the psychic hotline business. When she sees how Monster Love has tapped into a lucrative new income stream, she wants not just a part of it - she wants all of it. It gets even more complicated when Morguanna’s psychic call center DRONES start subscribing to the Monster Love service. In addition, humans as well as inhumans start lobbying to use Monster Love to find compatible mates.
However, the biggest complication arises when Morguanna’s son JOEY, who attends the same college as Hillary Su, goes undercover to steal the Monster Love secret and starts falling for Quillary.
In the end, Monster Love expands too quickly for Portent and her crew to effectively contain the darker supernatural elements that wish to infiltrate the human world. The seven deadly sins - LUXURIA (extravagance and lust), LULA (gluttony), AVARITIA (greed), ACEDIA (sloth), IRA (wrath), INVIDIA (envy) and SUPERBIA (pride) - take gorgeous human form, but soon reveal themselves for the horrors that they truly are. Two bitter rivals must join forces to fend off the infiltration, even if it’s an uneasy truce.
MONSTER LOVE is about acceptance, compassion, compromise and never giving up on your dreams or your search for your soul mate - however imperfect he or she may be.
